NOS member David shares his growing tips for May’s Species Plant of the Month orchid Robiquetia cerina.
At the recent species meeting I said that this orchid was found in Papua New Guinea and the Philippines, but after more research it is actually endemic to the Philippines.
Typically found growing on tree trunks in wet tropical forests at elevations of more than 350 metres. It is commonly called the Waxy Cone Orchid and and while mine is red it can also be found as yellow and is a long flowering species.

The foliage can be either the usual green or the more striking purplish colour. The foliage colour doesn't reflect the flower colour as I have many of each and all have the same flower.
I purchased my plants from Orchid Mania and have found that they flower right throughout the year but need a well shaded position and plenty of moisture and humidity during the warmer months.
So you can grow this species and be assured it will grow and flower easily in your shade house with the usual attention that you give all your plants.
Good Growing. David
