NOS Plant of the Month for May

NOS member David shares his growing tips for May’s Plant of the Month winner Bulbophyllum Elizabeth Ann 'Buckleberry'.

Registered in 1969 was a primary hybrid orchid made by Bulbophyllum longissimum x Bulbophyllum rothschildianum. This orchid is a good grower which builds into a specimen quickly, and its many cascading spikes would be a notable addition to any collection.

It requires a shaded position giving the plant bright indirect light and a regular watering. It should be planted in a shallow tray or saucer and is best hanging in a house. The preferred mix is bark and perlite and the best time for potting is September.

The plant you saw at the last meeting, actually grows hanging from the poinciana where it gets good light and a good supply of water.

I don't fertilise with my usual regime but I fill a fertiliser basket with plantacote and occasionally a watering with Peters CalMag Finisher. So it is responding to its positioning and rather minimal care.

So if you would like to grow this orchid look around autumn shows sales tables as they are in flower at this time.

Good Growing. David
