NOS Spring Orchid Show 2024
Last weekend we held our annual Orchid Spring Show in Nambour, on the Sunshine Coast! The success of a well-planned orchid show hinges on the quality of the blooms showcased and the timing of the event. While the 2023 display of Dendrobium Speciosum was stunning, an unexpectedly warm winter caused these orchids to bloom earlier than usual. Recognizing the need for variety, our members stepped up with a magnificent display of soft cane Dendrobiums and numerous other species and hybrids, creating a colorful wonderland filled with delightful aromas for our visitors. Over the two-day event, we welcomed 650 attendees and showcased 425 plants for judging, challenging the judges with high-quality entries in every category.
The Award Winners for this year’s Nambour Orchid Society Spring show event are::
Champion Show Orchid: Paph. Vanguard’s Lebeau, grown by John.
Reserve Show Champion: Den. Mousmee, grown by Loraine, who contributed the most entries with 33 plants. Both John and Loraine exemplify excellent growing skills, as do many of our 120 members dedicated to showcasing quality plants.
Champion Show Species: Paphiopedilum sukhakulii, grown by John Robertson of Robertson Orchids in Woombye, with Beryl and Graham Robertson serving as patrons of the Nambour Orchid Society and presenting awards.
Champion Show Specimen: Den. Stardust, grown by Kathy from the Maroochydore Orchid Club.
Champion Australian Native: Den. Kingianums x unknown, grown by Lois from Noosa Orchids & Foliage.
Champion Foliage: Huperria PNG Rock Tassel Fern, grown by Theo from Glasshouse.
The results exceeded expectations, thanks to all the participants who went the extra mile to ensure an exceptional event for everyone involved! Looking ahead, the Nambour Orchid Society will celebrate its 70th anniversary in 2025 with a Spring Orchid Expo in conjunction with the Sub-Tropical Garden Festival.
