NOS end of year ‘Mini Show’

In celebration of our last meeting for 2022 we held a members only ‘mini show’. It was a great way to see out the year with some superb orchids on display, raffles, awards and prizes.

David and Lorraine’s Pinalia multiflora was crowned the mini show Champion orchid; please see photos and more information about the flower below (clicking on a photo will enlarge it).

This orchid previously known as Eria multiflora is an epiphyte species found in Java ,Sumatra and Bali at elevations of 1400 - 2100 metres. It grows in our shade house with 50% cloth, but that is because we have a lot of vegetation around, so you may need 70% if well positioned. It grows extremely well and is obviously contented with the environment that it is given. Regular waterings every day in warm dry weather and once weekly in the cooler months. It is fertilised weekly with Peters Excel CalMag Finisher and sprayed occasionally with Confidor to keep pests at bay. This orchid was the pride and joy of Wayne Harris and following his death we acquired it and will always cherish it in our collection. it is a fine specimen and a very rewarding orchid.

Reserve Champion went to Renanthera SCBG Fireword, pictured below, belonging to Gabrielle.

We also announced our annual Judge’s Choice award. All of our monthly Judge’s Choice winners were considered for the prize and the 2022 winner chosen. Long-time member Judy took out the award with her stunning Dendrobium Golden Aya (October’s Flower of the Month) while newcomers Dean and Rosanna were crowned this year’s novice winners for their plant Gastorchillus retrocallus.

Well done to all our winners and a huge thank you to everyone who helped make 2022 such a success. We look forward to doing it all again next year and hope you enjoy the Mini Show gallery below. Merry Christmas and Happy New Year!
